Sunday, January 20, 2019: Bike Ride at the OMSI Lunar Eclipse Party
A total lunar eclipse occurs the evening of January 20, and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is having an outdoor viewing party for the event. The bike ride will leave OMSI at near totality to view the eclipse along the adjacent Springwater Corridor. This will be a good viewing area, as the Springwater Corridor starting about a mile South of OMSi turns into one of the darkest places in Portland where you still have an expansive view of the sky. The darkness is due to this area being a nature preserve, so the installation of permanent lighting is not permitted. The path also has a new salmon culvert with a viewing platform on top where the ride will pause before heading back to OMSI. Here’s a timeline for the total lunar eclipse:
8:41 pm – Total eclipse begins
8:55 pm – Bike ride leaves OMSI
9:12 pm – Maximum eclipse
9:43 pm – Total eclipse ends
OMSI may cancel the viewing party if the weather is rainy, but the bike ride will take place regardless. You never know when there might be a break in the clouds!
Meet: 8:45 p.m., at OMSI’s front plaza, 1945 SE Water Ave (map)
